HOW TO SET GOALS THAT ACTUALLY WORK

We've all been there.


We set the goal in the beginning of the year, and by March we're let down by our own self. Most people I talk to that don't like goals are the ones that have tried it and failed. And truthfully, I get it. Goals are hard!


I won't lie to you.


Goals stretch us, hold us accountable, and create tension.


I'm not an expert or anything in goals, but I have went through a lot of failure. Though I love goals, they are difficult for all of us.


It's not that we don't like goals, it's that we don't like the way they stretch us.

We tend to blame the goal, instead of taking personal accountability.

Here are 3 SECRETS to set goals better than you ever have this year.


SECRET #1: INPUT GOALS > OUTPUT GOALS

First, we need to understand there are two different type of goals. Output goals are result -oriented goals. For example, "I am going to lose 20 lbs this year". Truthfully that is not a bad goal, but it's incomplete. Losing 20 pounds is measurable, attainable, and clear. The reason it is incomplete is because of it's input.


Your input goals is HOW you will achieve your output. For example, if my output was to lose 20 pounds, my three input goals will be to,

  1. Workout with a partner 4 times a week

  2. Buy only healthy, clean foods starting in March

  3. Run one half marathon with my spouse

If someone did those three things by 2022, I guarantee they would be close to losing 20 pounds.


Here's the secret


We don't fall to the level of our goals, but to the level of our habits and systems.

People who are smart, know that 90% of their energy needs to go into the daily, weekly, and monthly inputs.


INPUTS are EVERYTHING.


SECRET #2: YOUR MINDSET MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR GOALS

The other thing that is holding you back is your mindset. Your goals truly rely on your ability to change, grow, and learn. This will TEST your mindset and the things you have become accustomed to.


We all do it


We all get comfortable doing something a certain way.


But here is the secret.


Your goals won't cost as much as you may think, BUT they will cost you your old mindset.



SECRET #3: LOOK AT THEM EVERY DAY


You need to look at your goals every single day.


I can't tell you how many times I have talked to people and they tell me that they have't looked at what they set in January for 7 months or something.


Goals have to be exciting, momentous, and intriguing. They need to be IN YOU not just something you write on a piece of paper.


You need to take them personal.


Put them on your phone, write them on your mirror, tattoo them on your arm. I don't care what you do, just put them in a place that will get your attention all the time.


As the old saying goes,


"Out of Sight, Out of Mind"
